Getting what you want.....

....is not nearly as important as giving what you have. Did I mention I'm a stress-eater? Well, I am. If I'm stressed (or 'stretched' as my mother says, because she doesn't speak English and still she's right if you think about it. Another example of my mother's English: my parents live in an appartment and the front door to the building is made of glass. The whole door! And after a birthday party one of the guests, I don't know if he had one too many, tried to walk through that door without opening it. When my mother told me the story over the phone, she said: "Hij zat helemaal Disney op de trap." He was so Disney, he had to sit on the stairs. 'Stressed' and 'dizzy' are words that are frequently used in the Dutch language. We borrow words from all kind of languages actually. Don't ask me for examples, can't think of any other examples now. Oh yes, 'trottoir' for instance! A common Dutch (or French) word. But that wasn't what I wanted to talk to you about today.) I eat! You know they are renovating our bathroom don't you? And that we have to limbo dance to get to the downstairs toilet (oh, that's another borrowed common word in the Dutch language too) because of all the rubbish, I mean equipment, the bathroompeople store in our Great Hall (that's what we call it because we have A) no idea what else to call that room and B) we have 'attitude' ). Well, my desk is in the Great Hall too. So we could of course call it the study, but somehow that doesn't fit the Great Hall. Or our attitude. Up to last weekend I could easily limbo dance my way to my desk. But after that weekend (in which we had the birthday parties for 5 people all in one party in our house, which was the idea of my mother and sister), for some reason I'm restricted in my limbo dance movement. I now bump into things on my limbo way. So...I don't know if it is because the bathroompeople stored some more stuff there or because of all the chocolate and crisps I've been gobbling down in a couple of 'stretched' out moments. It's probably the first option. Yep. I'm quite sure. I think. Most probably. I use one of the toilets upstairs (we have 4 toilets in total in our house, and STILL people can't find one) so as far as that need goes I'm okay, but my camera and the uploadingthing for uploading photos onto my computer are on my desk. And I need them to upload the very interesting photos of the very interesting discovery they made while dismantling our bathroom. Trying to get to my desk leaves me covered in bruises so it's a choice I have to make. Will I keep you in suspense now or will I sacrifice my unblemished (haha) body and limbo over to the desk to get the uploadingequipment. Hmm. You will find out soon how much you mean to me ;-)

  4. LOL. I love the way to tell stories in the middle of your sentences, (because I do it too). Some people say it's do to a short attention span, (look over there... is that a kitty?), but i think it's a sign of higher intelligence..(I'm quite sure that's spelled wrong... but I haven't finished my first coffee yet... by the way, there's a hole in the bottom of my cup! Grrr)... Anywho, I digress. So... good post! I like it!

  7. He was DISNEY! That's a delightful malapropism. I picture Goofy sitting on the front steps, saying "Gawrsh!"

  11. I can't wait to see what you found in the bathroom. I deviate from topics too. But unlike you I lose my appetite when I am 'stretched'.

  12. Yup, you're stressed. LOL!

I'm stressed too. I'm hoping that exercise will counter some of it, so my jeans don't get too stretched .. but it seems you're exercising a lot just trying to get to the toilets and it isn't working for you!

    That was funny, though!

  13. Ha! That was funny......I love the way you write too, like you'd say it!

  14. You mean to say 'je ne sais quoi' is not an English phrase? The English are also guilty of stealing a few words from other languges usually derived from German or French. :)

The last time I had extensive work done at my residency, I chose to sleep in a tent for a fortnight... just as well it was during the humid summer. ;)

  15. Jinksy, oh you are so inventive with words ;-o It could be an inspirations for David's Verse and Worse. Or for a beautiful poem of your own ;-)

Berthddu Suit, your curiosity will soon be 'killed' and I wish that would happen to me too, alas....munchmunchmunch (and without having smoked weed, because that gives you 'the munchies' too I heard ;-))

    Jay.....ánd ......I wear stretchjeans! ;-)

Dughallmor bunch of Beagles, we had a great evening, I just feel sorry for the other people in the restaurant, we had so much fun! And no vino pour moi, I was driving ;-(

    t i m, Touché!
A tent offers all sorts of other dancing options LOL

  16. Berthddu Suit, obviously I didn't mean that I wish I would be killed too, but I wish I lost my appetite when stretched. Phew! Glad we cleared that up. ;-)

  17. Tim just touched the tip of the iceberg. English (forsooth) includes aloha and taco and rajah and lots of other fun words. I imagine all languages do it.

My mother-in-law used to say "second-storage" when she meant "second-story" (of a house) -- maybe you don't call them "stories" in Nederland -- and English was her second language too.

    Do I detect a pattern?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Rhymeswithplague, we call a 'story' in the sense of a floor an 'etage', which is of French origin I'm guessing, or a 'verdieping'.

I think you probably do detect a pattern. Oh, I have to tell you this one too: my mother does Nordic Walking, brisk walking with a long stick in each hand, to exercise the arms too. Maybe you know this kind of walking. She doesn't say Nordic Walking though. She calls it Nordy Wokky, which sounds much better we think! ;-)
