Sunday Selections: the nap time edition no. 3

This is the last nap time edition. They are still cute (of course they are), but by now it’s beginning to get a bit booooooring to watch animals sleep.

Sunday Selections is hosted by Kim from Frogpondsrock and gives us the opportunity to finally post those photos that have been hanging around in folders on our computers for ages.

Various shades of green

Although the title of my previous post suggests the opposite, actually growing greens is very easy. It's the rest of the vegetables I'm worried about. Tonight we enjoyed the first harvest from my vegetable garden. Fresh greens. They smelled wonderful and felt really crispy. Not at all like the greens (Dutch: raapsteeltjes) I usually buy in the supermarket.

I made a risotto and added the greens about halfway through the cooking process.

It tasted really good.

Usually I make stamppot raapsteeltjes with greens (mashed potatoes with butter and milk, a bit of cheese, lots of pepper and finally the greens stirred through), but I didn't have enough greens for that now. Perhaps in a couple of weeks.

Not so green anymore is our Bengeltje. The old girl is 20 and still going strong. She looks good for her age doesn't she? She must have a very strong heart, because she's almost totally deaf and usually fast asleep, so if we want to get her attention we have to touch her. And every time that scares the hell out of her. She's also a bit wobbly on her legs sometimes, but hey, we'll be walking with a Zimmer frame if we've reached her age. Apparently 20 cat years equals about 95 human years. If we are lucky enough to be still walking by that time. Go Bengeltje!

Camera Critters, respectable age

This is Bengeltje (pronounced: Bangeltyuh). She came to us, together with her sister when she was just a little kitten, 19 years ago. Her sister died about a year and a half ago.

Bengeltje was an unexpected addition to our family. When we went to get her sister Lapje (pronounced: Lopyuh) Bengeltje was rather taken with hubs. She climbed onto his lap, fluttered her eyelashes at him, purred as loud as she could, so we ended up taking two little kittens home. On our way home, we had to decide on a name for this little beauty. Since hubs was rather taken with Susanna Hoffs, singer of The Bangles, it was soon decided: Bengeltje, which also means 'little rascal' in Dutch.
When we adopted the four young cats (see here, and if you hold the [Ctrl] button when clicking on the link, it opens in another window, just a little tip for the people who didn't know that) last year, we were a bit worried how Bengeltje would take to them.
Fortunately we need not have worried. She just ignores them and sometimes chases them around the house. But she also is very willing to share her meal with them, letting them eat out of her bowl when she's eating.
Sometimes I see Bengeltje walking through the house with one, two, three or four of the young ones sneakily tailing her. And when she looks back to see what's happening behind her, her followers pretend that its purely a coincidence that they are there. Lots of paw licking, looking up to the sky, whistling (if they could).

So, that's our 19 year old Bengeltje. A respectable age for a cat.
