E....... is for KWPN (huh? that can't be right?!)
ABC Wednesday round 4: E
(for more ABC Wednesday entries click the link or just join in the fun and post your own)
I would like to set you, fellow blogger, a challenge.
Let me explain:
Many of you know that my horse Naloma is expecting a foal that will be born in April (I can hardly sleep now, fingers crossed that everything will be allright).
Naloma comes from....uhm, we call it a 'stam', perhaps it translates into 'stem'?, meaning part of a family tree, that is called the Loma-stem (if you click the link, it will take you to a list of famous horses from this stem). All mares born in that family have a name that ends with 'loma'. Naloma's mother is called Aloma, her grandmother is called Eloma and so on. She's also a KWPN-horse (KWPN = Royal Warmblood Studbook of the Netherlands) so she is listed in the KWPN-studbook. A KWPN-horse has to have a name that begins with a letter that is attached to the year in which it was born.
This year is (and there it is, finally, the ABC Wednesday-letter of this week) the E-year.
So the name of Naloma's foal must begin with E.
If it is a mare, we would like the name to end with 'loma' or preferably with 'naloma'. Eloma is too simple and besides, her grandmother is called Eloma too. So that is not an option.
If it is a stallion, we can call it any name we like, as long as it is 'clean' (you know what I mean) and starts with E.
Since you are all very intelligent and creative and lovely people I would like to set you a challenge. CAN YOU COME UP WITH A NAME FOR OUR FOAL?
Maybe you can leave your suggestion in the comment section? We even will think of a nice thank-you-gift if we actually use the name you suggested.
If you need more inspiring information (or maybe this just makes it more difficult):
The foal's daddy is called Whitesnake.
- Whitesnake's father: Cavalier
- Whitesnake's mother: Moglichkeit and hér father is called Corofino.
- Naloma's father: Laurin Holstein, he lives in the USA under the name Sandstones Laurin (click the link and read his wonderful story, he is a very special horse!)
- Naloma's mother: Aloma, hér father is a very famous thoroughbred called Lucky Boy.
Good luck! I am really curious to see what names you come up with (hopefully).

That was a difficult one. I know very little about horses, end even lees about there very special names, but I'll place it in my brain somewhere and if some bright ideas should come by I'll let you know.
ReplyDeleteSo your horse has a very important pedigree or family tree. I am afraid I can't find a name, for I don't know anything about horses. May be Evaloma? Because it's her first foal, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteHow about Exceloma because it's going to be an excellent mare? Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOOPS! Frgot to say that my ABC Wednesday post is at
ReplyDeleteMore of Me - EG
How about
ReplyDeleteEric Lowe (a viking from the low country) if a stallion
or
Ericaloma if a dame ?
lovely above commenters, thank you so much! I'm so excited. Love your suggestions so far. Big smile and a warm noseblow from Naloma (horses put their noses against your face and softly blow if they like you. If they don't you lose your nose ;-))
ReplyDeleteI came on over from you sweet invite!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my horsey blog!
Well now, I will be thinking with you in the future for the foals name...right off the top is: should it be a filly, is to name it after the grand dam, and add your own personal pet name after.
Eloma's Beauty/Dunn girl/silky/fire/pressence..... Whatever name that she embodies at first glance or her very nature.
KK
Elizaloma for a filly? Or Lucky Cavalier for a colt?
ReplyDeleteI have a great-granddaughter named Ellie, so my first thought was Ellieloma. What color is she (if it's a filly) apt to be? Were she to be black, for instance, I would think of Ebonloma.
ReplyDeleteI hope all goes well!
I know it's probably not a very 'horsey' name, but Edgar came to mind immediately. Sorry, that's the best I can do...
ReplyDeleteAs you have A Whitesnake in the family Led Zeppelin connection Evermoreloma or if a Stallion Evermore.
ReplyDeleteExcaliburloma. I think you can see my influences. Very personal E choice. Elsinorloma.
I've been thinking here for about twenty minutes and have come up with nothing. Zip. Zero. However, I haven't given up. I'll be back if something really clever falls loose.
ReplyDeleteGood Grief - your anti-spam word is Essor. Hmmm. I kinda like that.
that was interesting.
ReplyDeletemy suggestion would be Et-tuLoma!
all commenters above, again, nice suggestions! We have been thinking for about 8 months now and you manage to suggest names that we haven't thought of yet! HOW GREAT ARE YOU?
ReplyDeleteI like Kacy Elona's Beauty/Star suggestion and Granny Ebonloma the best.
ReplyDeleteIf it's a colt, I'd name him EA Games. :-)
We had two fillies (Nigerien barbs) this year and named the Isolde yar'Arwen and Kalahari... I have yet to figure out a fitting "African" name of her, so if you have any thoughts in mind, let me know!
Ooooh, we were going to be silly and suggest things like....umm....Erosieloma... Egabbiloma...even Ebeagloma! But we like Reader Wil's suggestion....Evaloma :o)
ReplyDeleteSlobbers xx
dear commenters, again, many thanks for your lovely suggestions and Beagles, no offence but you obviously meant Elabradorloma ;-)
ReplyDeleteElenoma ? Ellie for short? Obviously feminine... Mybe Edenoma and Eddie for a male? I haven't read anybody else's comments, so you may have the same suggestions. I Hate my computer for being so slow in letting me see your up to date posts! x
ReplyDeleteJust re read post - stallion Eagret? - Eager Beaver? - Easy Rider? - Early Riser? - Eeny Meany? Think I'd better stop...
ReplyDeleteJinksy, no your suggestions are 'fresh' ones. And also very nice! Gosh, we will have trouble picking a name.
ReplyDeleteDon't hate your computer, sometimes I write a post and save it as a 'concept', and then I post it and the posttime is still the one of the conceptsave (if you know what I mean). So, it probably isn't your computer's fault. Hate me instead ;-)
I am quite terrrible at naming animals, even with my deep love for them. I am thinking EllieMaeLoma -Ellie-May for everyday use. ElvisLoma for a boy. Oh, I stink.
ReplyDeleteI just can't wait to see pictures of the new little one.

ReplyDeleteHow about Esaloma (ee-sa-loma. Normally it would be spelled with an i, but no one who is not french canadian will notice!).
ReplyDeleteI also like Evaloma. Although someone already suggested it. Sounds Argentine!
For a stallion... I once made up a ficticious race horse named Eight Days a Week. LOL. No seriously, ummmmm how about Echo, or Evenstar? We need to see a pic when he's born. You'll know his name when you see him.
Well, let's think.
ReplyDeleteEdaloma
Enyaloma
Elkaloma
Ermaloma
Esmaloma
Evalinaloma
But I do like Evaloma, and I also like the idea of calling her Eloma plus something - like Eloma Lynn - if that's acceptable.
Otherwise, you could call her E's Eloma, or maybe Easter Loma
dear commenters above, have I already told you all you are THE GREATEST AND LOVELIEST BLOGLANDERS I KNOW? Well, you are! And you have some lovely ideas too! Gosh *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI am new to the blogger world. I have enjoyed reading your posts the last couple of weeks. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI thought if it were a mare... Elindaloma. Elinda comes from an Estonian folk tale about a sky goddess. But when I sound it out to myself, the name sound slightly Spanish, and Linda in spanish means pretty.
It is were a stallion, um for some reason that's a little harder. First thing that comes to mind is Sandy's Gold after reading about Sandstone. Or just plain Corazon d'Oro since the article also said that Sandstone is all heart.
Anyway thanks again for sharing your world. Perhaps I'll get myself going in the blogger world and come back again with an identity.
Anonymous, thanks for taking the time and making the effort to think of a name for our foal. I (again) like your suggestions. Although if it's a boy it also has to start with E. And I so liked Corazon d'Oro *sigh* Isn't Sandstones Laurin a special horse?
ReplyDeleteWhy not start your own blog?
It would be nice to know who I'm 'talking' to ;-)
Carolina,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I guess I missed the part about the stallion's name needed to begin with an E also.
Mmmm... perhaps Evening Star... from Poe's poem.
In the poem, a stargazer thinks all the stars he sees look cold, except for one "Proud Evening Star" which looks warm with a "distant fire" the other stars lack.**
** the above synopsis is from a Wikipedia entry on Poe attibuted to Killis Campbell.
I have been thinking about starting a blog but am not sure how or if I should. Thank you for the encouragement.
Anonymous (for now)
Anonymous, thanks again, lovely idea!
ReplyDeleteThe 'how' is easy, the 'if', well, that's up to you ;-)
Ok you asked fo it, and I'm holding you to letting me ride him/her. I'm booking my ticket tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteFor a filly;
Echoloma, Edenaloma
Eavanaloma - Eavan means 'radiance' in Irish.
Edanaloma - Edana means 'noble' in German.
Eirianaloma - Eirian means 'splendid, bright' in Welsh.
Eirwynaloma - Eirwyn means white as snow in Welsh.
Elinaloma - Elina means 'noble, kind' Slavic.
Emlynaloma - Emlyn means to 'strive or excel' in Welsh.
Eowynaloma - Eowyn was invented by JRR Tolkein and means 'Horse of Joy'
Eponaloma - Epona was a French Horse Goddess.
Ernaloma - Erna is an English name meaning 'Earnest'.
Etanaloma - Etana means 'dedication, stength' in Hebrew.
Some of these would work for a colt too!
Other names for a colt;
Esarosa - means 'white wolf' in native american
Eyal - means 'strength' in Hebrew
Ezell - means noble, maybe Ezell Cavalier?
How's that for a start?
Berthddu Suit, LOL booking your ticket seems a bit premature, but with all these suggestions you are having (or is it 'making') a good chance! Oh gosh *sigh*
ReplyDeleteDid you daughter(s)? enjoy their riding lesson?
After all those names I forgot to mention what a great E post this was!! And yes the girls had a wonderful lesson thanks :)
ReplyDeleteWow, this is so interesting! It never occurred to me that there might be such complicated rules for naming horses.
ReplyDeleteIt seems Berthddu Suit is, like me, interested in the meanings of names :) A few others that would keep 'Naloma' in a filly's name caught my eye: Elanaloma (from Elana, Hebrew for "tree"); the similar-sounding Elianaloma/Eleanaloma/Eliannaloma (from variations on Eliana, with Hebrew origins meaning "the lord has answered," or possibly "daughter of the sun" from the Greek god of the sun "Helios"); Evinaloma (from Evina meaning "life" or "animal").
What a heartwarming story about Sandstones Laurin, too :)
Berthddu Suit, thanks and that's good to hear ;-) And thanks also for joining the mad people who are my 'followers'. I might return the favour for I always visit your ABC-entry and like it, so.....
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I love to name horses. For AQHA horses we try to use parts of both parents names but I can do E!
ReplyDeleteI have to say first that some of the names that bloggers came up with are great! And so many! I liked Jay's suggestion: EvaNaloma- very pretty sounding and you could call her Eva.
If it's a filly:
EbeNaloma- Egyptian for wonderful
EceNaloma- Turkish for queen
EkhoNaloma- Greek for re-sound (or redo as in another Naloma)
EderneNaloma- Basque for beautiful
EdonaNaloma- Albanian meaning "she loves"
ElfledaNaloma- Midieval English meaning noble beauty
ElianaNaloma- Hebrew name meaning "My God has answered"
EVALINE: Danish form of Norman French Aveline, meaning "little Eve."
EVLIN: Anglicized form of Irish Gaelic Éibhleann, meaning "beauty, radiance."
If it's a colt:
EALDWINE: Anglo-Saxon name composed of the Old English elements eald "ancient, old," and wine "friend," hence "old friend."
EDAN: Variant spelling of English Aidan, meaning "little fire."
ELLDRICH: Variant form of German Aldrick, meaning long time ruler.
ELVIS: Perhaps an English form of Scandinavian Alvis, meaning "all wise." - Or maybe just name him after... Elvis???
EMIR: Variant spelling of Arabic Amir, meaning "commander; prince."
EMYR: Welsh name meaning "king."
ENGEL: Short form of longer Germanic names containing the word engel, meaning "angel."
ERKKI: Finnish form of Old Norse Eiríkr, meaning "ever-ruler."
EROS: Greek name. In mythology, the god of love.
ESHKHAN: Armenian name meaning "prince."
ESPIRIDIÓN: Spanish form of Greek Spiridion, meaning "little spirit."
ETAN: Variant spelling of Hebrew Eitan, meaning "enduring, long-lived."
EZZELIN: Italian form of English Acelin, meaning "little noble one."
I like EDAN (little fire) but I think you'll know what to call him or her the minute he or she is born. Thanks for visiting my blog. I've had babies both ways now, breeding and worrying, and now not knowing and getting a lovely surprise. The surprise was better! Dani is an awesome filly and Sandy did great for being way too young to be a mommy.
Sorry this is a long post.
Caprice
Caprice, hahaha, you have put some effort into it. Djeez! Very good. I like a lot of your suggestions. Thanks! Gosh, it will be very difficult to choose a name, unless as a couple of you suggested, we will know the name if we see the foal. I wonder.
ReplyDeleteBig smiles!!!!!!
Carolina...sorry I'm so late with this...do you realize I've been mulling this over for a week now? It hit me yesterday when the girls were watching Dora The Explorer and they were chasing stars.
ReplyDeleteEstrellaloma
Estrella is Spanish for Star...es-stay-ya-lo-ma. I thought it was lovely!
forgot the r...
ReplyDeletees-stray-ya-lo-ma
Mel, Ha! Thought as much! It IS lovely. Nobody will now how to pronounce it though. Hehe. But who cares. Oh, isn't this exciting? So many lovely suggestions. I will have to make a spreadsheet to organize all these names and who suggested them and what they mean.
ReplyDeleteI swear that if it was a J-year, I would name it Joepie de Poepie. LOL Would have made things a lot easier.
Big smile! x
Joepie de Poepie-LOMA! : D
