An afternoon in the Wild West

Actually, from our point of view it was an afternoon in the tame East. There was a competition Western Riding going on in Nieuwe Pekela of all places. A nice opportunity for me to practice my photography.

IMG_6400 there was a cowgirl on a Fjord horse, opening a gate

IMG_6467 a cowboy happily trotting along

IMG_6239 a cowgirl doing something with a watering can while her horse checks out the scary thing with the saddle on it’s back

IMG_6387 a poor lonesome cowboy

IMG_6383 another poor lonesome cowboy

IMG_6415 a lonesome cowgirl

IMG_6251 another lonesome cowgirl

IMG_6335 two happy campers who thought I was from the newspaper and wanted their picture taken (LOL)

IMG_6220 a not so happy cowgirl

IMG_6404 the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly
even the horse is laughing (I’m expecting some ‘horse laugh’ comments now)

I took about 200 photos, had some nice conversations with people who explained some of the rules and regulations of Western Riding, and really enjoyed myself. I’m definitely going to visit more of these Western horse riding events. Good to practice photography.

  1. It looks fun! Who rode the wild boar?
You've taken some great photos, Carolina :-)
(By the way, I think we've sorted the blog loading problem)

  2. It does look fun and photogenic. Reverse parking a horse must be even harder than in a car!

  4. Jabblog,
it must have Dopey or Grumpy or one of those guys who rode the wild boar ;-)

    Jennyfreckles,
getting your horse to walk backwards in a straight line is difficult enough. Making all sorts of turns around barrels does not make it easier I think.

    Putz,
Hi there cowboy! The one on the horse doesn't look so happy. He reminded me of the song Lucky Luke sings at the end of each book: "I'm a poor lonesome cowboy, and a long way from home...".

  6. Ooooh, lovely, lovely riding photos!! LOVE the 'reverse parking'! LOL!

And all those lonesome cowboys and girls. The unhappy cowgirl made me laugh, though perhaps she shouldn't have done.

Beautiful horses! I miss riding, but with two damaged shoulders and a damaged knee, I really had to stop. :(

  7. Sorry Carolina, I just don't believe it. These riders look far too fresh-faced and clean, their clothes are tidy, no ripped Jeans or calloused hands anywhere. Where's the wild west?

    Cowboys and cowgirls? Nooooo,

Even the horses look freshly polished!

    Nice photos though.

  8. Jay,
Oh poor Jay. And I guess with two shoulders injured, driving horses will not be an option? Horses get into your blood don't they. I'd never been to an event like this. Really liked the atmosphere, very calm and relaxed, and the outfits of both horses and riders. Great for photos.

    Friko,
What can I say... I lied. Well, I díd say it actually was in the tame East didn't I? ;-)

  9. Nice photos! Did the cowgirl reversing go 'beep beep beep' or am I just too much a busdriver to think that?

  10. Gorgeous photos. I love Quarter horses, the ones we have here aren't as 'chunky' as yours I must admit. Ahh and my old lad used to look like that Arab . . just a bag of bones in a Weatherbeater jacket these days bless his flea bites. The Fjord horse is beautiful.

  14. Thre, you are obviously waiting for jinksy to do the horse laugh joke - but she hasn't got one! Must be slipping... :)
I want a cowboy hat now....

  15. Mara,
As already explained to you by email: the newest horses come with the beep beep beep device. And a handsfree set for your mobile phone. ;-O

    Baino,
WeatherBeeta blankets are far too expensive for our fat spoiled brats. They have to make do with a Harry's Horse one. And only when the snow is inches high ;-)

    Fantastyk Voyager,
    You're welcome ;-)

    Mimi,
And another guy wanted my telephone number hehe. They are a desperate bunch op people, those cowboys ;-)

    Rhymeswithplague,
Howdy partner! Or something like that ;-)

    Jinksy,
You were my last hope, since none of the others came up with an original horse laugh joke. Very disappointing ;-)
