100 things I love about the Netherlands: 5

You know what I love about the Netherlands? Or at least about the part where I live (which is the North Eastern part), but I imagine there are lots of other parts in our country where these things can be found too:

Little stalls with excess fruit, flowers or vegetables

that people have in their gardens. The stalls vary from very sophisticated, almost professional market stalls, to just a small table with a box on it. And there is always a little jar in which you can leave money for that what you’ve taken from the stall. Isn’t that cute? And apparently this method works; the money is never stolen (well, almost never). I love that we still dare to trust people.

IMG_6155 the sign bottom left on the stall says Aardappelen = potatoes

I could have taken more photos of different little stalls, but when hubs is driving it goes something like this:

“If we see a fruit stall or something, I have to take a photo for my blog. Okay?”
”Okay.”
”There! We just passed one!”
”O.” (keeping his foot firmly on the accelerator) “Did you want to take a picture?”
”Well actually….”
(deep sigh) “Shall I turn the car?”
”No, we will probably see other ones. But I dó want to take a photo of the next one. Okay?”
”Okay.”
”There! This was one with….”
”O. Missed it.”
”Yeah, but….”
”Shall I go back? (very deep sigh)
”Hmm, no, that’s okay. But the next one…!”
”Okay.”

So these were all taken when I was driving. Except for the one with the plums. But that was only because we just passed three other ones and I was really getting almost angry with him. So he sighed again, grumbled, turned the car and drove back. Have you seen what’s on the little sign? Such fun ;-)

  1. What a lovely country, love this tradition... there is some of that around here, but not very much.

  3. What a charming custom. I laughed at your conversation... There are some compensations to being single!

  4. Great fun and good to know there are still plenty of honest people around. Lovely stalls! I have similar car journeys to you but the only way I ever get any photos is if we're stuck in traffic :-/

  5. your way of expressing things always put a smile on my face.

I had not commented for a while Carolina, my mum is here for a visit, it's school break for my 7 year old daughter and my wife is on leave from work at the moment.

3 against 1, i cant win you see!!

  6. We have those little stands here in Michigan too, but they're not nearly as cute at yours! Usually just a card table with a cigar box & some tomatoes or whatever.

Oh can you beat a good summer tomato, yum!

    Hugs & love,
    Pam

  7. Karen,
It's cute isn't it? But I almost never carry small change, so I've taken photos, but not bought something. Poor people, watching from behind the curtains, thinking 'customers!', only to see someone jump out with a camera. LOL

    Jennyfreckles,
    sometimes I wish... ;-)

    Jabblog,
ah, but that's the advantage (or perhaps in this case disadvantage) of living in our part of the country. Not much traffic ;-)

    Dave,
Poor Dave. Three women. Life must have been difficult for you these last weeks ;-)

    Mimi,
Courgettes (zucchini), that's what people over here have in abundance. It's usually too cold for huge tomato-crops (I love tomatoes too). And plums. I see lots of plums now. We will not have to suffer from constipation this season ;-)

  8. Unfortunately there isn't much of that around here. Well apart from the apples ones. And I don't like apples. Unlike it's in apple sauce or apple pie. Oh, and I saw a thingy once that was giving away onions. Which I hardly ever use!

  9. I almost, almost, almost wished I wasn't living in the middle of a city...

  10. This is so interesting. When I drive out to my sister's about 5kms from where I live, the roadside is littered with stalls of fruit, veg, flowers and I've often wished I'd stopped and taken photos but never had the nerve or the time. Definitely going to do it because these remind me so much of our little stands. I'm really enjoying travelling the Netherlands. Lovely.

  11. Mara,
I know they grow a lot of onions in the NOP, because when I go to my sister, who lives there too, you can just smell the onions in the car when you pass a field of them. You should eat more apples and onions. Very healthy. But you know that. So just ignore my well meant advice ;-)

    Bianca,
What about a pied-a-terre in town and a big house in the country ;-) That sounds good doesn't it?

    Baino,
I felt a bit uneasy every time I jumped out of the car with my camera to photograph the stalls, I must say. Hehe. And then going away without buying something. The things I do for my blogfriends!
    ;-)

  13. Dave,
LOL, you are very welcome, hehe. But really, you can do so much to a photo (if you're a clever nerd like yourself ;-)).

Anyway, what does 100 SOOC mean?

  16. Dave,
Thanks for explaining. Somehow I think 100 SOOC are far easier to achieve than 100 TILATN ;-)

  17. I love any place that still believes in the honor system of payment. Some places in America there are such stands, with the owners trusting you to pay, but in some other places they would be robbed repeatedly. Such a shame that all places aren't so honest.
