Just an ordinary day at the Brinkbeest household...

Yesterday a friend was here with his little dog Ruby. Ruby loves chasing a ball and can play that game for hours on end. So friend threw the ball into the paddock where the horses were. Willem and Evie were very interested in the ball too. Willem is sniffing the ball while Ruby is on her way to fetch it... ...oops... ...Willem is not going to give up the ball without a good chase first. Run Ruby! Run! Meanwhile Nufnuf has made a new friend. It's a crow that I've noticed in our garden before. He (or she, but I'm sticking with 'he') is easily recognizable because he has one manky foot and can't walk properly.

Perhaps you can see that his left foot isn't quite as it's supposed to be. He observed Nufnuf attentively...

...while our chickens kept a close eye on Tumtum's behind. Our chickens are very interested in recycling and they know that what goes into a pig at the front... ...comes out at the other end and is a culinary feast for a chicken, not to be missed. But Tumtum's intestines were still busy processing, so they eventually lost interest and gave up the pursuit. Tumtum and Willem had a very intersting conversation about... ...oh I don't know what about. It was a private conversation.

  1. Please adopt me. I'd be content to hang out and play with your critters all day! Provided that I don't have to dine with the chickens...

  2. Great photos and what a wonderful life you have. The crow befriending Tumtum (he is too adorable) is so sweet. Animals can be so accepting at times.

Love the photo of Willem and Tumtum, they really look like they are having a conversation. OMGOSH Willem is gorgeous.

  3. Pigs eat scraps... chickens eat pig poop... and THAT is why chicken tastes like everything!

  4. I think you should write a childrens book centred around that saga!

  5. Very entertaining! Life is never dull in your neighbourhood and you've certainly got more than enough material for a whole series of children's books - and films - and associated merchandise . . . think BIG! ;-)

  6. Life With Dogs,
the chickens get normal chickenfood too, this is just their idea of snacking ;-) We'd feed you stamppot (see earlier posts), which is marginally better

    Cece,
we do have some great critters ;-) I feel sorry for the crow, but he doesn't seem to bothered by his handicap. The pigs are friendly towards every other animal around, they are just great.

    Jewels,
I wouldn't know about their meat (veggie you know), but the eggs of our chickens taste far better than the ones from the shop or even from our neighbour's chickens. But they do not experience as much culinary delights as ours do of course ;-)

    Rinkly Rimes,
Funny, that exact thought crossed my mind too. If only I could...;-)

    Jabblog,
Oh if only I were talented and creative enough... (no, honestly, I'm not) ;-)

  7. Really? Chickens eat pig poop? I didn't know that ... I'm glad I don't eat eggs, now. LOL!

  9. I love your pics! And that foal has grown something huge during the winter! Willem is indeed a handsome lad, please tell me you don't eat your chickens! Oh I forgot, you're a vegetarian, very lucky chooks, very lucky piggie

  10. What a size difference between Ruby and Willem! Loved the photos, all of them. I remembered that chickens were omnivorous, but had never thought about pig droppings. :)

Regarding an earlier post: Congratulations on growing your own veggies! Your risotto with greens looks delicious!

  11. Baino,
Evie has grown so much in a year, I just looked up some photos of last year. It's hard to believe it's the same horse.

    Pat,
Fortunately the chickens also eat snails. And thanks, I'm very proud of my vegetable patch actually ;-)

  13. My parents have horses and little dogs too. It's funny to watch the dogs act all tough and then seen the horses chase them away with their tails between their legs!

  14. Your furry friends sure do have a wonderful life with you.... love that last pic of Willem and Tumtum. I do wonder what they were talking about, looks like they were gossiping fershur, talking trash about someone. LOL

  16. I love Nufnuf & Tumtum. I'm not sure how Oskar would feel about sharing his life with pigs.
