Sunday Selections is hosted by Kim from Frogpondsrock and is thé place to post those photos that have been hanging around on your computer for far too long and need to be seen by other bloggers. Or something like that. Hop over to Kim’s rocking frog ponds and join in if you like.
I’m not always really following the rules to the letter, but Kim doesn’t mind. To make it up to her I’ll post some photos of Lovebirds or Ladybirds or whatever you call them in your country. We call them Lieveheersbeestjes. They are not incredibly creepy of course. BUT… I just thought I’d warn you. There’s also a photo of a spider. Just so you know. I’ll start with the cute ones:
This is a 14-dotted one. Not to be confused of course with the 14-spotted one, which is a much rarer kind of ‘lieveheersbeestje’. I’m not kidding.
Back end. The entire creature, not only its back end, is tinier than the ‘normal’ red/black ones. About two millimetres head-to-tail at the most.
Don’t worry, he made it.
And he’s saying ‘Hi Kim!’. Or ‘look mama, no hands!’.
I’m glad I’m not the mother of this daredevil.
And now a really scary, but also rather beautiful photo, if I may say so myself, of a spider. So don’t look if you’re suffering from even a mild case of arachnophobia. Do not be curious. Just look away.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you…
It caught a fly, beheaded the poor victim and is probably saving that best part for last. When I checked this photo on my computer and saw that eye looking back at me it did send shivers down my spine. And I’m not even scared of spiders.
Anyway… wishing you all a nice week and I promise that when something blogworthy happens, I’ll tell you all about it. Life has been incredibly boring, but also quite relaxed. As far as working my ass off in the garden can be considered to be ‘relaxed’.
We call them ladybugs here in Massachusetts bit ladybirds in other parts of the country. You are right about that spider...I'd take that shot with a telephoto lens.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, and it's such a cute spider. They are very good moms and carry their babies on their backs (quite a load to carry). And it has eight eyes. Have I sold it to you yet? :-)
DeleteI think all your pictures are wonderful...even the spider. I've always liked ladybugs and think they're sort of cute.
ReplyDeleteNow this is kind of odd but when we were children and would catch a ladybug we had a song we sang and then blew the ladybug into the air.
Here's the song:
Ladybug, ladybug fly away,
Your house is on fire and your children are burning.
Kind of a creepy kids song, don't know where it came from or who made it up. Must have been one of those songs handed down through time.
That is a creepy song, haha. It doesn't even rhyme. Tsss, hehe. We were always told you could tell their age by counting the dots. Nonsense of course :-)
DeleteWe sang a ladybug song too, and ours did rhyme in a sort of "slant" way:
DeleteLadybug, Ladybug, fly away home:
Your house is on fire and your children are gone.
Love that eye! What a shot.
ReplyDeleteWould you believe it has eight eyes? It has. I didn't know that, but I took some more shots and could see more eyes on those. Clever fly that can escape from all those eyes and legs ;-)
DeleteI do like spider photos and Your lady birds are wonderful, just wonderful. Thank you
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome ;-)
DeleteI'm with Kim. All of these shots were brilliant. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I thought you'd all be running away from the spider shot, but it turns out that most of you like spiders. Who knew? ;-)
DeleteBeautiful beetle shots... and I love spiders!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, see my reply to The Elephant's Child. I'm amazed. I thought spiders were more unpopular ;-)
DeleteWell, I was going to ask you if you sang "The Ladybug Song" over there, but Grey Horse Matters beat me to it :-)
ReplyDeleteYou Americans are just weird ;-)
DeleteOh, those are gorgeous!! You know I love beetles, and the spider is great!! How far away were you?
ReplyDeleteGosh, good question. The spider in real life is about 1,5 or 2 centimetres max. I think I was about 15 centimetres away from it? It is hard to tell when you're looking through the lens, as you well know I guess :-) It's a wolf spider I believe. Interesting animals.
DeleteIn Texas, where I was raised this is a ladybird.
ReplyDeleteOh, I hate spiders but I made my self look because the lady beetle photos are so amazing andcute..and it is an amazingly cool shot - love the eye...
