Proof

Yesterday afternoon one of our friends came over for a cup of coffee. While we were sitting outside, enjoying a bit of sunshine, one two three lots of hubs' home baked cookies and our coffee, I got a text message from hubs. I opened the message and read: “congratulations on your mom’s birthday and I’ll be home late”.

“What’s wrong”, friend asked, looking at my frown.

“Hubs just texted ‘congratulations on your mom’s birthday’, I said.

“Oh, congratulations”, friend said. “So it’s your mom’s birthday today.”

“I don’t think so”, I frowned again. “I thought my mom’s birthday was tomorrow.”

Friend knows me and said: “Are you sure? Your hubs is better at these things isn’t he?”

“Hmm. What date is it today?”, I asked friend.

“March 8”, he said.

“Oh”, I laughed. “It’s my mom’s birthday today. Oops. Guess I’ll have to go there tonight then. It’s her eightieth.”

And then we had another cup of coffee and a cookie or two. And that evening I went to visit my parents, who had been wondering why I hadn’t called yet and why I hadn’t visited earlier that day.
I didn’t confess that I had been a bit confused about dates and days. Some things are better left unsaid.

But it does prove that I am really bad at remembering birthdays, as I mentioned in the ‘Oh pifflesquit’-post. In case you thought I just made that up. I never just make things up.

  1. At least you've got a reminder. I once completely forgot my father's birthday and didn't phone until three days(!) later. He wasn't too happy...

  2. If I relied on my husband to remind me about important dates everything would be forgotten - even Christmas!

  4. Funny tale, Carolina. Your memory was, no doubt, affected by all those cookies. :)

  5. Here's something else to remember: I am exactly ten days and ten years behind your mother.

  6. Mara,
That is a big OOPS. I'm almost sure something similar happened to me, but I've banned it from my memory ;-)

    Jabblog,
I would forget Christmas too, if only people would let me ;-)

    Karen,
    I'm chuckling ;-)

    Pat,
I wonder what was in those cookies ;-)

  8. My problem is names. I can remember numbers or dates quite easily. But names trip me up constantly. I'm forever staring at people I've met before and wondering, "How can I get this person to say his name so I don't call him the wrong one later?"

  9. Van harte gefeliciteerd met je moeder. My mum is going to be 80 next year. We are going to Holland than A bit later than her birthday because it is in the middle of winter. I am looking forwards to it.

  10. Thanks for reminding me. It's my father-in-law's birthday tomorrow and I ALWAYS forget. If only he was on Facebook. Love those reminders, I'm hopeless. Pass the cookies.

  11. Putz,
I hope not, but it could be a case of Oldsheimer's light ;-)

    Suldog,
I once went to an evening with one of those memory training gurus and he said that the best way to remember a name is to associate it with either something funny or sex.
    If that isn't a helpful tip... ;-)

    Marja,
Dankjewel :-) Wat leuk dat je naar Nederland komt. Is het lang geleden dat je hier bent geweest?

    Baino,
You're welcome ;-) I've just emailed you some cookies. If you open your computer's coffee cup holder, you'll probably find them. And happy birthday to your father-in-law.
