Oh, the very exciting life I lead
I should change my blogheader. 'Not that anything interesting ever happens to me....'
HA!
It should read:
'The very exciting (not to mention glamorous) life of Brinkbeest.'
You see, last night the horses were a bit restless. I heard some bangs and usually that means that Naloma is having a heated discussion with Willem. So it didn't really worry me. I kept one ear open however, while the rest of me was fast asleep (yeah, in my dreams).
Then, at about half past three a.m., I heard Willem whinnying. That was very unusual.
So I went out of bed, put on my dressing gown (meanwhile the whinnying had woken hubs too and he asked if I was going to check the horses), went downstairs, completed the outfit with my very solid stable boots (I told you I'm glamorous) and went outside. We leave a little light on in the stables since Evie's birth, so that Naloma can see where Evie's legs are if Evie is lying down. We wouldn't want Naloma standing on them.
When I walked up to the stables that little light in an otherwise pitch-black night allowed me to see that their stable door was open! And when I came nearer I could see that both Naloma and Evie were gone!
My first thought was: "they're stolen! My horses are stolen!"
Then I thought: "no, can't be. They must be somewhere on the grounds."
We keep the garden gates locked and we would have heard something or the dogs would have barked if someone had forced the gates open.
I went back to the house to get a torch.
Halfway back hubs came towards me, with a torch. Very gallant of him. "Evie and Naloma are gone!", I said.
"WHAT?"
"Stable door is open. They are gone."
(To let you know that hubs is also very fashion conscious: he was wearing a dressing gown, his wonderful dark green rubber boots and, just like me, not much else.)
We went back to the stables and switched on the other stable lights and the manege lights. I grabbed their halters and some bribes in the form of horse sweets and followed hubs into the night to search for our horses.
We soon found them, Naloma happily nibbling on a beechtree and Evie standing next to her, just looking around if there was something fun for her to do.
Fortunately our horses like us and don't run away when we approach them. The bribes we usually carry will have something to do with that. Soon we could take them back to their stable and hubs could get some control over his breathing. He is quite easily panicked and since it was him that fed them last and probably hadn't closed the stable door as well as he should have, panic and guilt made him not the most relaxed person.
Willem finally stopped whinnying, great horse that he is. He doesn't like it if he's left alone and if he hadn't mentioned it, we would have never known that the girls were on a night out. Well, we would have probably found the empty stable the next morning *shudder*.
You see? Glamorous AND exciting my life is! Have I told you about the night we went burglar hunting? No? Or the night that we had policemen patrolling our garden while we were fast asleep? No?
Why do I always think that nothing happens here? I must be delusional! I'll tell you about those action packed nights later.
And tomorrow I will post some great pictures I made today when we visited a horse marathon. Gripping stuff!

Yup! You have it made. Around here it's just watch the grass grow.
ReplyDeleteIvan Toblog,
ReplyDeletewanna swap? I'd love to watch grass grow. What does one wear to such an occasion? ;-)
Oh, yes, you do have an exciting life. Over here momma gets to watch the grass grow and gets all excited when it's time to call the lawn guy to come over to mow it☺
ReplyDeleteI am interested in seeing the horse marathon photos. I am not exactly sure what that entails but inquiring minds want to know.
ReplyDeleteScout'n Freyja,
ReplyDeleteGosh, I'm in awe. You have a guy to mow the lawn. And a gorgeous one too (why else would you get all excited, or you are just easily pleased ;-)). What luxury!
Pouty Lips,
stay tuned. The photos are great, you will be amazed! I promise!

ReplyDeleteYou lead a very interesting life! My life seems to be extra boring right now...
ReplyDeleteI always thought mention of stable doors and horses was no more than a dire warning to be careful. Who'd a thunk it could produce a tale like this!
ReplyDeleteThat was actually a very cool post! I love the way you write. And you do sound terribly glamorous!
ReplyDeleteWell, it's not that nothing interesting ever happens to you, it's that all the really interesting things apparently happen at night when the rest of the world is fast asleep. That's when you and hubs throw on your rubber boots (and very little else) and go gallivanting around the countryside.
ReplyDeleteI think Willem needs a very special treat for alerting the two of you to Naloma's and Evie's little night jaunt. He undoubtedly had gone out merely to cajole them into returning....
Haha . . I don't stable mine but in the past they have gone for a 'wonder' if someone's left the gate open. Fortunately the Arab is very chatty and makes a helluva noise if his little mate disappears. I just wish they'd choose to run off when I'm fully dressed and looking elegant. No wait, I never look elegant.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so happy that you found Naloma & little Evie!
ReplyDeleteAre you posting pics of the outfits? Come on, you can't put in a description like that with no pictures! lol
ReplyDeleteSo glad the girls were safe... aside from that, you crack me up. I guess I lead the same glamorous life... my pajamas and my rubber boots when I go outside early in the a.m. LOL
