Yesterday we went to see the marathon of horse driving trials that were held near where we live. Horse driving trials, or combined driving, consists of three phases: dressage, obstacle cone driving and a cross-country marathon. On Saturday the competitors had to do the dressage and obstacle cone driving part. For more information about horse driving trials: see this wikipedia entry.
The marathon is the most spectacular part. The photos speak for themselves I think. Every obstacle has to be negotiated at great speed, because the fastest time counts. And although every driver has a whip, they don't hit the horses to make them go faster. I've not seen it used one time! The drivers mainly use their voice to make the horses go faster or to slow down. It's really fantastic to see.

Wow, great photos. I've seen it a few times on television and was always amazed at how they got through the corners! Don't know about the grandfather though... ;)
ReplyDeleteThey are good . . it's a fun event alright but your slideshow is sideways . . the 'groom's eye view perhaps?' Thanks for visiting. I'll be back.
ReplyDeleteMara,
ReplyDeleteit's really exciting to watch live. If you ever get the chance...
Baino,
hi, nice to see you here. Why is the slideshow sideways? Weird. Not on my screen. Is your computer the right way up? LOL It might be because you are on the other side of the world. That will be it!
Oh, wow!! I would have LOVED to have seen that! I've never seen an event like that anywhere near me!
ReplyDeleteThey look so skilled - I guess that would be what's called 'driving to an inch'! And it looks exciting, too. Smashing photos! You need to give me some hints on how to get good action shots!
Jay,
ReplyDeleteMe? Giving you photography tips? Hehe. I'm starting photography lessons this Thursday. The course finishes mid December, so I hope I know what I'm doing by that time. For now the only thing I do is keep the camera steady and put it in 'idiotproof'-mode. And there is the speed-setting of course. I've used that too. On some of the photos.
They came out pretty well, but I hope that next year my photos will be really stunning. Knowing all about lighting etc. then. I'm so happy with my camera :-)
Were any found guilty?a
ReplyDeleteChairman Bill,
ReplyDeletehaha
Terrific post!
ReplyDeleteI read your comment about 'idiotproof'-mode... that may help with exposure, etc, but will never help you with composition! Top/main shot is strong because of the composition... which is ALL you!
