Yesterday I visited a 'schriktraining' at the stables where a good friend of ours keeps her horse (she is 'no. 6', the one with the big dark brown/white Tinker). 'Schrik' is the Dutch word for 'scare' or 'frighten'. These horses will never be frightened of anything anymore. They will not raise an eyebrow if a big pink hairy scary monster pops out of a dustbin.
Riders, horses and audience had a great time. It certainly gave me some ideas for training our horses at home. Although I don't think Evie will have problems walking through the caution-line-curtain that scared the shit out of most horses (literally, the green wheelbarrow you can see in some of the pictures is full of it).
Camera Critters is a fun meme, hosted by Misty Dawn.

part of growing up i suppose for the horses..
ReplyDeleteBrilliant id - training for life.
ReplyDeleteOops - should be 'IDEA'
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post!I have never imagined it!I hope they are okay! Adorable horses!

Amazing how many things these horses have to go through for the training. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting series of photos !!
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine used to train police horses ... it was amazing watching ..
What a wonderful idea! I'll have to do something similar with Sid when we get him, to condition him to be a PAT therapy dog - they meet all kinds of scary things when they visit nursing homes and hospitals, and even schools!
ReplyDeleteI love the one with the smoke. That's a GREAT idea. And I would imagine that (as with therapy dog training) you end up with a nice close bond of trust with your horse when you've completed the course. Excellent!
I think that it's really smart to participate in this kind of training! And to provide it...
ReplyDeleteLet's face it; not everyone is sensitive to the temperament of horses - I've seen people in cars speed past someone riding the side of the country road... doesn't take much to slow down!!
What a wonderful idea the shrick training is. Pity there isn't a training class for some drivers and some dog owners who could learn a thing or two about how to behave around horses. My friends and I have had some scary moments over the years.
ReplyDeletewhoa! Did you see all those pool noodles? That big orange ball is bigger than the horse! I'd be afraid too!
