Bad news…

…. so I’ll give it to you straight. Yesterday we heard the news that hubs (his name is Hans, should you want to pray for him or send positive thoughts his way; it probably works better if they are directed towards someone with a name ;-)) has colon cancer.  So, for the next two weeks we know what he (and I) will be doing. Hospital visits galore. To find out just where exactly the tumour is and if the cancer has spread. Hopefully not. And then his treatment will start. Depending on where the tumour is located the treatment will be an operation and afterwards radio/chemotherapy if necessary. Or the other way around; first radio/chemotherapy and then an operation.

Quite shocking wouldn’t you say? We thought so. But we’re optimistic people. And hubs needed a vacation anyway. And he doesn’t feel ill or sick. Yet.

Shit.

Talking about shit; next Monday he has to go to the hospital for a second colonoscopy. Today we went to the chemists for the ‘industrial laxatives’ he needs to take beforehand. And I know I’ve posted this Billy Connolly video before, but it is hilarious and very topical, so worth watching again:

I’ll make sure he’s near the toilet…

(Don’t get me wrong. I know this is a serious situation. But there’s no point in getting all depressed about it. We’ll see what happens. We can always get depressed later.)

  2. Carolina, I'm so sorry to read this. You'll need your sense of humour in the times ahead. Barry's brother was diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2008 and has had surgery, chemo and radiation. There is life and laughter and normal life after treatment. Keep smiling and good luck to you and Hans.

  3. Yeurgh! That's the only thing I can think of, except a few very choice words I had better not send into Cyberia!

    Sterkte voor jullie allebei.

  4. Yes, prayers are appropriate. A positive attitude is a necessity and your sense of humor will aid with that.
Colonoscopies are funny because the only one who suffers is the listener.

The lead up to the colonoscopy it pretty much as Billy Connolly tells it. But the upside is you aren't thinking about anything else at the time.

  5. Carolina, makes my woes look utterly stupid. Good luck to you and despite the embarrassment of having a colonoscopy, it's one of the most treatable cancers. My father survived it although it was tough for a while if Hans needs surgery, my heart goes out to you both, prayers are for the religious but my thoughts are with you.

  6. I have never seen or heard Billy Connolly before (and hope I never do again)...my education must be extremely lacking.

I will be praying for you and Hubs by name.

  9. Prayer said for Hans.

You (and, I assume, he) have the right attitude. Recovery, etc., is so much better for those with humor in their lives.

  12. Yes, a great attitude helps so much and you two definitely have it -- and a great sense of humor to go along with it (which sounds a lot like my family!!) You will be in my thoughts for sure... and I did enjoy the comedic slant a bit too much, quite funny I must say. :-]

  13. DEAR...I was laughing so blasted loudly with that video(it doesn't even touch the sides...0!)
Hallelujah diet...I had to ask my man for the name...he litterally said to me, as we ate that way for 6 months-till I got the worst case of tendonitis(sp?) ever from chopping veggies, " I have never felt better Kac". Hense, make sure to have a good food processor!

My prayers are yours dear hearts...you will get through this!!!

  14. Dear Carolina and Hans. You will be in my thoughts and prayers continually. I know, from my own personal experience (1981), how scary such a diagnosis can be. Fortunately, you have only to take one day at a time. I will also pray for Hans physicians and other caregivers that they may make wise decisions in his treatment.

    Hugs to you both. Pat
