Ever been shagged by a Kakapo?

Yesterday evening, the wonderful Stephen Fry took us to meet the almost extinct New Zealand Kakapo in his BBC 2 show 'Last chance to see'. A Kakapo is huge parrot that can't fly, is nocturnal, makes a wonderful deep 'booming' sound as a mating call and has lots of other curious characteristics. Read all about the wonderful Kakapo here. You may have never heard of the Kakapo, I hadn't before yesterday's program, but you will love it as soon as you see it. The Kakapo loved co-presenter and conservationist Mark Carwardine as soon as he saw him actually....

  1. How blind must you be to mistake the head of that (granted, very nice looking) man for a female kakapo?
Perhaps he just wanted his fifteen minutes of fame. He certainly made me laugh!

  2. I'm so glad you saw this, and decided to share. It was the funniest sight ever! Maybe it was the bloke's green clothes that fooled the parrot...

  3. My computer hates me & will not shoe me any videos right now. Stoopid computer! I'm going to have my mom person look up these birds though, cause now we are curious.

  4. Bugger, now I am going to have to go to New Zealand to see this gorgeous little bird - as if I don't have enough places to visit already!

  5. Mara,
maybe he saw something green and just went for it ;-)

    Jinksy,
That is what I thought! (green sweater and funniest thing) It's a great series isn't it?

    Sam,
They are to be found on a small New Zealand island. If you fancy trying...

    Oskar,
I hope your mom and you will be able to see it if your computer stops playing up. It's really very funny ;-)

    Don't Bug Me!,
poor you (not!). Don't wear a green sweater when you do. You never know what triggered him ;-)

  7. Wonderful clip - thank you for sharing. How marvellous that Mark Carwardine allowed the Kakapo to remain on him for such a long time - that's a true nature-lover ;-)

  8. I didn't see thr program last night but did see this scene on a preview - must catch the repeat.

There are some viscious birds in New Zealand that will strip the roof off a car if you park it in the wrong place.

  9. Haha . . no wonder they're endangered! Not the sharpest tools in the shed!

  10. Anya,
De hele serie is interessant (moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik niet alle afleveringen heb gezien). Maar wat mij betreft is alles wat Stephen Fry maakt/presenteert geweldig ;-)

    Jabblog,
just moments earlier they were comparing scars a kakapo left on their arm, and they were quite proud to have an actual kakapo-scar. I'd like to see the faces of the people he will be explaining these scars to ;-)

    Gerald,
hmmm, if we park our car in the wrong place we get a ticket from a vicious bird in a uniform
    ;-)

    Baino,
    their claws are!

  12. OMG. I almost cried laughing. The damn parrot, beating his wings back and forth on the cameraman's face... oh, Lord, I actually DO have moisture in the eyes from laughing now.

  13. I'm afraid the moisture that I experienced wasn't in my eyes.

  14. Brett,
glad to be of service ;-)

    Suldog,
I thought you would appreciate the parrot's efforts. Glad you visited and enjoyed it ;-)

    Uncly Skip,
never mind, that happens when you get older ;-)

  15. That really was so funny! I missed the programme so thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I can't imagine why the Kakapo would fancy Mark - although the nose and beak are a similar shape - but he really was giving it his all, wasn't he? Loved how the wings were slapping off his face!

  16. Oh, my goodness! That was one of the funniest things I've ever seen! Poor guy - and the parrot drew blood, too! Hahaha! Poor guy. LOL!

So funny ... thanks for that!
